Onam, the grandest and most vibrant festival of Kerala, As Malayalis across the globe eagerly await the return of King Mahabali.


10 Days of Celebrations :

Onam is celebrated over ten days, with each day holding its own unique significance and rituals.

  1. Atham : The festival begins with the creation of the Pookalam, a floral carpet, symbolizing the welcome of King Mahabali. Families start decorating their homes and preparing for the festivities.
  2. Chithira : The Pookalam is enhanced with more flowers, and preparations for the upcoming celebrations continue. Homes are cleaned and decorated.
  3. Chodhi : New clothes, known as Onakkodi, are purchased. This day emphasizes renewal and preparation for the grand festivities.
  4. Vishakam : The markets bustle as families gather ingredients for the Onasadya, the traditional feast. Excitement builds for the upcoming celebrations.
  5. Anizham : The iconic Vallamkali, or snake boat races, take place, showcasing Kerala's rich cultural heritage and drawing large crowds.
  6. Thriketa : Families come together, and the festive spirit grows as the Pookalam continues to flourish with vibrant flowers.
  7. Moolam : Traditional dances and cultural performances, such as Kaikottikali, are held, adding vibrancy to the celebrations.
  8. Pooradam : The Pookalam reaches its peak, and clay idols of Onathappan, representing King Mahabali, are placed in the center, marking the start of large-scale celebrations.
  9. Uthradam : Onam Eve is filled with final preparations for the grand feast. Homes are cleaned, and families gather to celebrate the arrival of King Mahabali.
  10. Thiruvonam : The grand finale of Onam, featuring the Onasadya feast, worship, and joyous festivities that unite communities in celebration. It is a day of great jubilation, marked by new clothes, cultural events, and the highlight of the feast served on banana leaves.

Traditional Onam Feast (Onasadya)

The centerpiece of Onam celebrations is the grand feast, Onasadya. Served on a banana leaf, the Onasadya is a lavish spread of up to 26 traditional Kerala dishes, including rice, sambar, avial, thoran, and a variety of pickles and sweets like payasam. The feast is a symbol of abundance and the spirit of sharing, as families and communities come together to enjoy the meal.



Festive Activities

Onam is a time of vibrant celebrations, with various activities and performances taking place across Kerala. The Athachamayam, a grand procession featuring decorated elephants, folk dances, and music, marks the beginning of the festivities. The famous Vallamkali, or snake boat races, draw large crowds to the state's backwaters, while the Pulikali, or tiger dance, adds excitement with its energetic performances.
